Kayaking Questions And Answers

Here are our answers to some frequent questions about recreation and kayaking on the Hood Canal in Union Washington.

If you have a question about kayaking which isn't answered here, please contact us

Our family always paddled a canoe when I was growing up. Is kayaking what people are doing now instead of canoeing?

According to recent statistics, paddlesport recreation continues to grow in the United States. The National Survey of Recreation and the Environment (NSRE) found that during 2002, 20.6 million Americans paddled canoes, 7.3 million paddles kayaks, and 20.2 million went rafting. Kayaking is the fastest growing segment of the entire boating community with 182% growth over the past seven years (NSRE). Canoeing has grown 49.9% and rafting 35.9% over the same period(NSRE).

Are your kayaks more stable than a canoe?

We use a Wilderness Systems Recreational Kayak. The model is the Pungo Classic. The hull is a multi-chine. At 29 inches wide, this kayak delivers easy handling and tracks like it's on rails. Being so wide, this kayak is extremely stable and not at all "tippy".

Do I have to be an active athlete to kayak?

No. That's what's so wonderful about kayaking. You can paddle at your own pace. The kayaks are light and move through the water with ease, even with light paddle strokes. The cockpits are roomy and easy to get in and out of, even for full-size paddlers. Our single kayak has a weight capacity of 325lbs.

I'm 6 ft 8 inches tall, do you have a kayak that will fit me?

We most certainly do. Our Pungo Classic is 12'2" and will give you plenty of leg room.

We have small children, is it safe for them to kayak with us?

Absolutely. We have a 13' 10" family kayak that has two seats. This kayak is perfect for Mom, Dad and a small passenger. The beam on this kayak is 31.5" and it holds 450 lbs total. It is an extremely safe and stable kayak and also very popular.

I don't know how to eskimo roll, can I still kayak safely?

Yes. Our kayaks are Recreational Style Kayaks. They have a very wide cockpit and are not meant to roll over.

What if I tip over in my kayak?

Safety training is included with every kayak rental. Everyone who goes on the water is given safety instructions that clearly detail what to do in this situation. Self- rescue is an important part of our safety training.
